In 1974, a major exhibition in Cologne explored the topic of “previously unexamined resistance” against the Nazi dictatorship. It presented the city's “strongest resistance groups” to show that in Cologne there had been “resistance all over at a local level”. The exhibition was a great success, creating the basis for a critical reappraisal of Cologne's Nazi past.
Fifty years later, the NS-DOK is rededicating itself to this important topic, but from a different perspective. In the light of recent research into Nazi society, using the city of Cologne as an example, this exhibition looks into the forms and significance of criticism under the Nazi dictatorship: What place in Nazi society was it given by those in power? How did they react to open dissent and collective discontent, to private grumblings or public expressions of “criticism”? How did the people of Cologne react to this and what were the consequences of being critical?

“Feminism is no longer needed!”
At least that’s what antifeminist actors claim – and categorically reject feminism as a unified enemy. Antifeminism manifests itself in diverse ways. It pursues a political agenda of restriction and hindrance to participation. Antifeminism opposes socio-political changes that strive for more equality and enable diverse lifestyles. In other words, it is precisely against more freedom and participation opportunities that feminists are fighting for. Focusing on the context of Germany, the exhibition of the project “Spotlight – Recognising and Countering Antifeminism” and the NS-DOK provides initial insights and aims to encourage further examination.

Four fates - two places: Perpetrators and victims, persecution and crimes in Cologne and in Brauweiler
The EL-DE building in Cologne and the former workhouse in Brauweiler - two places both used for detention by Cologne’s Gestapo that became places of persecution, crime, torture and murder, especially at the end of the war.
Heinz Humbach, Teofila Turska, Ilse Neugebauer and Fritz Theilen - four life stories, four stories of persecution that connect the two places.
During this tour of the EL-DE building, you will learn more about the work of the Gestapo in Cologne and Brauweiler as well as the four biographies, each of which also represents a group of persecuted people: the National Committee for a Free Germany and the resistance at the end of the war, forced labourers, Jews and non-conformist youths.
