Not immediately recognizable are two hands in the underdrawing, of which the one with the long fingers was probably even already laid-in in paint (see red and pale blue mapping lines). Both are likely to have been planned in connexion with the woman standing behind the figure of St Aetherius, whose left hand was evidently intended to grasp his upper arm. In the final version, by contrast, we see a hand which can only plausibly be interpreted as that of St Aetherius himself.
