Archangel’s wings

Visible in the Archangel Gabriel’s wings are underdrawing lines that reveal the use of a quill as drawing instrument. This is indicated not only by their largely even breadth, and the blunt or angular start, and by the way they often spread out as they go along, but also by the way the pen deposits more ink on the surface when it is first applied, giving rise to a specific manifestation of numerous fairly short, curved lines. These are characteristic of quills, and can also be seen in other places in the underdrawing of the outsides of the wings, even though the flow of the individual lines varies according to how the quill was held, how much pressure was applied, and how full of ink it was.
