Ceiling opening

In the drawing of the beamed ceiling we can discern a rectangular opening which seeks to generate plasticity by means of hatching. To be distinguished from this hatching are a large number of short strokes that extend beyond the opening towards the dove as symbol of the Holy Spirit. Quite obviously, the plan was to show the entry of the dove through a simple opening in the ceiling. This ceiling opening was there not only in the underdrawing but also in the painting, but curiously it was at some later date painted over by another hand, so that today it is hardly recognizable as an opening at all.
