Many traces of Cologne's Nazi history and the stories of those persecuted under the Nazi regime are preserved in the city. Staff of the NS-Documentation Centre and the MiQuaLVR Jewish Museum in Cologne's "Archaeological Quarter" have developed a web-based app that takes users to places in Cologne they would not necessarily associate with Jewish history.
A detention and deportation camp was located in Cologne-Müngersdorf from 1942 untill 1945. Thousands of people, mainly of Jewish origin, were deported from there to concentration and extermination camps.
With around 3,800 war graves, the Westfriedhof is one of the most important sites commemorating war victims and victims of National Socialism in Cologne. Most of them died between 1939 and 1945.
On the Day of Remembrance for Victims of National Socialism (27 January), the "Youth and student memorial day" takes place in Cologne every year. The next Youth and Student Memorial Day will take place on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on 27 January 2025.
