Internships

Students of Modern and Contemporary History, Public History, and related fields can undertake an unpaid internship at the NS-DOK. This opportunity is primarily aimed at students who wish to complete a mandatory internship as part of their studies. Interns will gain insight into all areas of the  institution and will particularly work in the fields of research, exhibitions, public relations, and education.

All positions for 2025 are already filled. For internships in 2026/27, please send your application via email, including your CV and proof of enrollment (PDF), to nsdok@stadt-koeln.de (Subject: Internship Application). The application deadline for internships taking place in spring/summer 2026 is September 30, 2025. The submission deadline for internships scheduled for fall/winter 2026/27 is March 31, 2026.

Additionally, we offer internships in the areas of Archives & Documentation as well as in the field of Contemporary Issues (Information and Education Centre against Right-Wing Extremism, contemporary exhibitions, and democracy education). If you are interested, please contact nsdok@stadt-koeln.de for more information.

Currently, we only offer one-day career exploration opportunities for students of secondary schools. Applications can be submitted continuously with a lead time of at least 8 weeks. Please email nsdok@stadt-koeln.de (Subject: Student Internship) for this purpose.

"During my time there, I was able to gain an insight into the conception of exhibitions and public relations work in the museum, look over the shoulders of the museum education team and get an impression of the work undertaken by the collection department. I mainly supported the research department for two upcoming  temporary exhibitions, for which I did literature research on the one hand and was able to research and work intensively on the biography of a Cologne resistance fighter on the other."

Christoph Zeevaert, who interned at the NS-Documentation Centre from October 2022 till January 2023
