Museum of the City of Cologne

Discover the most exciting and fascinating aspects of Cologne's 2000 year history at the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum (Museum of the City of Cologne). In the historic Zeughaus (armoury) you will gain an insight into politics, cultural life, economics, and the everyday life of Cologne and its inhabitants.

On your tour you will first encounter things typical of Cologne: Klüngel (social networking), Kölsch (the local beer), Carnival and Eau de Cologne, Tünnes and Schäl (two popular stock characters from Cologne's traditional puppet theatre). Unique exhibits plunge you into the history of this cathedral city from the late Middle Ages to the postwar period. In the second half of the permanent exhibition you will encounter themes from culture and the economy: Reformation and Jewish life, school and university, citizenry and civic pride, trade and transport.

The neighbouring Alte Wache guardhouse from the time of the Prussian occupation houses special exhibitions on Cologne's art and history.

Guided tour: Everyday life in historic Cologne

What was everyday life like in Cologne around 1900 or in the ‚dark‘ Middle Ages? A huge amount of evidence – ranging from a wooden plate that was carelessly discarded and resurfaced in the sewers, to high-quality furniture in the shape of an artistically crafted cupboard – give visitors an insight into the living conditions of our ancestors. There are many interesting topics to be learned about at the museum – from childhood, hygiene, housing and accommodation, to clothing, eating and drinking.

Guided tour: The Stadtmuseum – overview

Learn about Cologne’s past. The tour is focused on medieval Cologne and the its history in the modern era to the end of its existence as a free imperial city. As a result of French and later Prussian occupation there were enormous changes in Cologne. The large-scale model of the city shows medieval Cologne in its heyday and illustrates its urban development. The town seal and „Verbundbrief“, a kind of urban constitution drawn up by the city’s influential craftsmen’s guilds, reveal a great deal about Cologne’s power structures. The city’s status as a staple town, shipping on the Rhine and the organisation of markets give an insight into Cologne‘s economic situation. And what about „Klüngel“, Cologne’s particular brand of traditional social networking? Good question....

Trotzdem Alaaf! - Kölner Rosenmontagszug 1991
