Museum education

The NS Documentation Centre with its special structure as a museum as well as a memorial and research centre offers special opportunities for education. All three areas each offer a different access to National Socialism and complement each other in a very productive manner. The Gestapo prison memorial site as a place of immediate encounter wins our full empathy. Though this promotes the education process, it does not provide us with enough information to understand what the core motivation of the NS regime was. To understand this, insight into the conditions of its development and the use of power, the role of violence and the mechanisms of propaganda as well as interactive events are provided. It is also important to underpin that the majority of the population were enthusiastically involved, whilst only a few opposed and resisted. It is indispensible to devote attention to the entire range of social reactions as well as overcoming the polarity of ‘victims’ and ‘perpetrators’, to illustrate the entire spectrum of all possible relationships with National Socialism. This is what happens in the museum part of this institution using the example of the City of Cologne. The local context allows for an easy access to the social conditions of the NS era, the whole range of which can be illustrated by means of numerous individual reports – in particular by means of interviews with contemporary witnesses at the media stations. These supplement the strictly documentary approach of the exhibits; the information provided is consolidated by illustrating what the NS rule and policies meant for the lives of individuals. As a research site, the NS Documentation Centre provides media and methods based on which a scientific discussion of the NS era can take place.

It is possible for individual visitors to visit the exhibition with audio guides, which are available in six languages (English, French, Spanish, Polish, Russian and German) and run for more than two and a half hours. You can also join one of our guided tours, which take place once a month and are free of charge. We also offer guided tours for groups, which are tailored to the age and educational level of participants. These provide you with information on the house, the memorial and core issues of National Socialism. Our educational work is based on expressly taking heed of the Beutelsbach Consensus on political education. This consensus covers the ‘prohibition against overwhelming’, which also includes the prohibition of overpowering students emotionally. The aim of the guided tours is the conveyance of factual, methodological and narrative competence in line with the motto of Walter Benjamin: The visitor is not to leave the museum not more learned but shrewder.

Education opportunities

The special structure of the institution allows for the work with children aged eight to twelve on the topic of National Socialism. This is done either in the museum itself or by means of a ‘suit -case of stories’ named ‘Kindermobil’, which is taken to schools and kindergartens by two specially- trained persons. Moreover, a programme for children of that age group is tailor-made to suit certain special exhibitions. The Cologne programme ‘Lesewelten’ organises ‘storytime’ events at irregular intervals at which children have the opportunity to read to in the museum.

An important part of the educational work at the museum and the memorial is the cooperation with teachers and trainee teachers. The NS Documentation Centre offers special tours on the educational possibilities at the institution, which are made use of by many teacher training colleges of the larger Cologne area; it also organises regular training sessions on various topics for teachers. In addition, a close cooperation was built up with various universities over the past few years. Part of this cooperation are special guided tours (e.g. on the design of exhibitions) and the joint preparation of seminars (e.g. on the topic of gender when teaching history) as well as support and advice for individual students on papers and essays.

Pädagogisches Zentrum und Geschichtslabor

Im bisherigen Sonderausstellungsraum auf der zweiten Etage wurde ein Pädagogisches Zentrum eingerichtet. Es besteht zunächst aus einem großen Veranstaltungsraum mit ca. 120 Sitzplätzen, der sich mittels Trennwände in zwei Gruppenräumen teilen lässt. Moderne Technik und eine vollständige Klimatisierung im Vortagsraum sowie in beiden Gruppenräumen ermöglichen Tagungen, größere Veranstaltungen und Ausstellungseröffnungen.

In dem verbleibenden Teil des Gesamtraums wurde auf einer Fläche von 105 Quadratmetern das neue Geschichtslabor geschaffen. Dies stärkt und erweitert die pädagogische Tätigkeit des Hauses: die museumspädagogische Arbeit und die Arbeit der Info- und Bildungsstelle gegen Rechtsextremismus. Bei dem Geschichtslabor handelt es sich um eine Form des selbstforschenden und interaktiven Lernens.

Ausgangspunkt für die Entdeckung des Geschichtslabors ist die „geheimnisvolle Frage“, die „mystery question“. Auch diese muss erst einmal gefunden werden, verbirgt sie sich doch zwischen den zahlreichen Objekten, die unter der Decke hängen. „Was haben ein Briefmarkenalbum, eine Milchkanne und ein Baströckchen gemeinsam?“ So lautet eine dieser Fragen. Der Antwort kommt man näher, wenn man in der gegenüber liegenden Wand aus Schränken die gefragten Gegenstände findet und sich die dort angebrachte farbige Code-Nummer merkt. Mit deren Hilfe lassen sich gleichfarbige Vorhängeschlösser öffnen, und geben nun den Blick frei auf ein Foto von drei Hitlerjungen, Karteikarten mit antisemitischen Verordnungen und ein „Zigarettenalbum“ aus dem Jahr 1934. So führt die Spur nun in die NS-Zeit. Letzte Aufklärung bieten dann die Hörstationen, wo in unserem Beispiel Manfred Simon erzählt, dass er sich aus Angst vor Angriffen der HJ zurückzog und mit Briefmarkensammeln beschäftigte; dass Nachbarn der Familie mit Milch aushalfen, als diese für Juden nur noch schwer zu erhalten war, und dass er sehr überrascht war, als er bei Ankunft im Exilland USA Schwarze in Anzügen und nicht in Baströckchen in der Metro sah. So findet sich die Aufklärung der Ausgangsfrage in der Biografie Manfred Simons. Es folgt nun nach diesen Entdeckungen eine Arbeitsphase, für die den Schüler/innen vertiefende Materialien zu den einzelnen Aspekten in Arbeitsstationen zur Verfügung stehen. Hierbei werden sie von speziell geschulten Mitarbeiter/innen begleitet und unterstützt.

Die spielerischen, motivierenden Elemente regen zum selbsttätigen Lernen in Kleingruppen an. Auch wenn der Zugang zum Thema spielerisch ist, sind die Themen selbst wieder – unserem Ort entsprechend – ernster Natur. Es geht um das Thema Jugend im Nationalsozialismus in fünf unterschiedlichen Bereichen: jüdische Jugend, begeisterte und angepasste Jugend, unangepasste Jugend, Kriegsjugend und Schule. Auch zum Rechtsextremismus kann im Geschichtslabor anhand von zwei Beispielen zu aktuellen Themen des Neonazismus und Rassismus gearbeitet werden.

Die Arbeit im Geschichtslabor ist integriert in ein 2,5-stündiges Programm. Dieses umfasst über die Arbeit im Pädagogischen Zentrum eine Führung durch die Gedenkstätte Gestapogefängnis und durch einzelne Bereiche der Dauerausstellung „Köln im Nationalsozialismus“.

In addition to the guided tour it is possible, on request, to book activities tailored especially to certain professional groups or for deepening certain aspects. The library and workshop rooms are available for project-oriented work. Furthermore, guided tours of the city are also offered: a general guided tour focussing on Cologne during the NS era and the topic ‘Von Navajos und Edelweißpiraten – unangepasstes Jugendverhalten 1933– 1945’ (Of Navajos and Edelweiss Pirates - non-conforming behaviour of youths 1933– 1945) in the Ehrenfeld neighbourhood with a subsequent visit to the memorial.
