In 1997, the NS-DOK opened the permanent exhibition »Cologne under National Socialism« shown here. This marked a milestone: with a wealth of evidence, the exhibition dispelled the widespread myth that most of Cologne's citizens had been opposed to National Socialism. Three decades have passed since then. Knowledge of Nazi history has evolved and expectations of a visit to an exhibition have changed too, as have the perspectives of our team at NS-DOK.
In the coming years, we will be renewing the permanent exhibition and would like to discuss this with you. To this end, we have intervened in the existing exhibition at twelve stations. The starting points are individual exhibits, texts, or forms of presentation that we now view critically. Together with visitors, more general questions that currently arise when exhibiting Nazi history will be discussed, such as how to deal with images of violence, problematic terms or discriminatory representations.
