nevertheless here!

Special exhibition: nevertheless here!

During the National Socialist era, friendly and intimate contact between Germans and prisoners of war or forced labourers was undesirable. In some cases, they were strictly forbidden.

But they are "nevertheless here": children who were born from such forbidden relationships. Their stories have long been taboo. They have hardly been academically researched and are barely present in the culture of remembrance. This exhibition is dedicated to their life stories.

More than 20 children from forbidden relationships were found in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands and took part in the "neverthelesse here!" project. With their memories, documents and photos, they laid the foundation for the realisation of the travelling exhibition. The exhibition tells their life stories and sheds light on their experiences of marginalisation and discrimination in the post-war period as well as their parents' stories of persecution.

"nevertheless here!" is a project of the Sandbostel Camp Memorial sponsored by the Foundation Memory, Responsibility, and Future (EVZ Foundation) and the German Federal Ministry of Finance according to the Educaiton Agenda NS-Injustice.

Four fates - two places

Four fates - two places

Four fates - two places: Perpetrators and victims, persecution and crimes in Cologne and in Brauweiler

The EL-DE building in Cologne and the former workhouse in Brauweiler - two places both used for detention by Cologne’s Gestapo that became places of persecution, crime, torture and murder, especially at the end of the war.

Heinz Humbach, Teofila Turska, Ilse Neugebauer and Fritz Theilen - four life stories, four stories of persecution that connect the two places.

During this tour of the EL-DE building, you will learn more about the work of the Gestapo in Cologne and Brauweiler as well as the four biographies, each of which also represents a group of persecuted people: the National Committee for a Free Germany and the resistance at the end of the war, forced labourers, Jews and non-conformist youths.
