In North Rhine-Westphalia, the MAKK is the only museum offering the entire spectrum of European arts and crafts from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, focusing on furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles, as well as fashion, jewellery and metal art, graphic design, painting and sculpture. Reopened in August 2019, the design section, which has been extended, is one of its kind in Europe: the only permanent exhibition featuring ‘art and design in dialogue’. The design exhibition focuses on North American and Western European products from the fine and applied arts.
Visitors can explore the comprehensive collections of Cologne’s second oldest museum over approximately 5,000 m2 of floor space. Located in the centre of Cologne, the outstanding building, designed by architect Rudolf Schwarz in the 1950s, is a beautiful event location, featuring a stunning stairway, the large Overstolzen auditorium, a charming courtyard and a café/bistro.
The variety of exhibits, styles, materials and themes is also mirrored in exhibition and event concepts, whether they focus on photography, architecture, fashion, ceramics or contemporary design. The MAKK is a lively forum for discussion. The museum’s team independently develops an exciting exhibition and event programme, often in cooperation with external partners for different target and age groups. As a museum for art and design, the MAKK is an important interface, connecting with the creative industries, with universities and with the Kölnmesse trade-fair company.
With the aim of further strengthening its design focus, the MAKK presents special exhibitions on topical design themes and is home to the annual Kölner Design Preis and Kölner Design Preis international award winners exhibition. Additionally, the museum has teamed up with cooperation partners to establish the joint ‘Cologne Design Lounge’brand in order to reinforce Cologne’s reputation as a design venue and to stimulate the design discourse. The Cologne Design Lounge event series brings together research, culture and business and is targeted at the players in the design world and at everyone interested in design. The MAKK is a design ambassador!
